The fact that there is the right counterpart for each piece shows the principle of duality, which proves that all things have two facets and this can be related to all possible areas of life. Male or female, light and dark, day or night, positive and negative are just a few examples of this principle which in different cultures is associated with a deep symbolism as in China with the yin and yang and it's also very present in different religions. Typically, this principle is associated with the colors black and white from a symbolic point of view and everywhere in different places it can be observed how deeply this symbolism is rooted and proves that it's one of the most important principles and that the world consists of opposites that form a whole. There are many legends in which this principle can be seen as well as in mythology and a good example here are gods who embody the different aspects of day or night such as Helios in Greek mythology which is also known as the personification of the sun and together with his sister Selene who is worshipped as the moon goddess gives people the light. The alchemists were also convinced that a duality can also be related to the human body and claimed that the body and the mind were two different things and had to be separated from each other. The fact that dualities were essential for the thinking of the alchemists can be observed in all possible areas and without the understanding of this it would not be possible to create the Philosopher's Stone and in their teachings it's important to unite them to a higher existence. This can also be related to the spiritual side which had an important role in alchemy and according to the philosophy, people first had to separate their mind from the body and then add it back to the whole in a higher state and this process was also associated with enlightenment and could also be related to the practice where first the substance had to be separated in order to add it again in an improved state.
