Today I had the opportunity to photograph this rather rare mineral, which is also known as allophane, which can be counted from the composition to the layered silicates. It has been known for over 200 years and was known in 1816 by the mineralogist Friedrich Hausmann (1782 - 1859) and the chemist Friedrich Stromeyer (1776 - 1835) and when it comes to the naming it was probably referred to the Greek words allos for else and phainesthai for to appear and refers to the special appearance. As is likely to be noticeable, unlike other minerals, it does not have its own system of crystals and this type of minerals is also called amorphous and you often see this with other minerals of the class of silicates and also the appearance can vary and it usually takes on a gray, green or blue color. Several hundred places of discovery have been documented worldwide so far and the best known are Switzerland, Scotland, USA, Austria or Belgium and even if it is rather rare, it can occur in large numbers in some locations. It is often found in different ore mining areas and mainly the formation can be traced back to a hydrothermal way and it is mainly found in cavities of sedimentary rocks and can often be found together with other minerals such as quartz or limonite. From an economic point of view it is not of interest and particularly appreciated in collectors circles and when storing it you should make sure that it is best to store it in a protected container because if you store it too dry it can often happen that the structure suffers.
